The African Union (AU) has issued a forceful rebuke of Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state, demanding an immediate reversal of the move. In a January 2026 communiqué, the AU Peace and Security Council warned the unilateral action threatens Somalia's territorial integrity and risks destabilizing the Horn of Africa.
The council emphasized that no external actor may alter the borders of AU member states, declaring Israel's December 2025 recognition legally void under international law. Analysts suggest the decision could strain regional counterterrorism cooperation and embolden separatist movements across the continent.
With Somalia recalling its ambassador to Israel last month, the AU is now mobilizing diplomatic support through UN channels. The bloc urged member states to back Somalia's sovereignty claims at upcoming General Assembly sessions while encouraging internal dialogue to address Somaliland's status through constitutional means.
This development comes as the Horn of Africa faces heightened security challenges, including ongoing militant activity and drought-driven displacement. Observers warn the recognition dispute may complicate international aid efforts and maritime security operations in critical Red Sea trade routes.
