Syrian Army Imposes Curfew in Aleppo Amid Escalating SDF Clashes

The Syrian Arab Army declared Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo closed military zones on January 7, 2026, imposing a full curfew following intensified clashes with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The measures, effective since 3:00 p.m. local time, aim to "protect civilians" during ongoing operations, according to an official statement.

Humanitarian corridors were opened until the curfew’s enforcement to allow civilian evacuations, though movement is now prohibited until further notice. State media reports indicate recent drone attacks and shelling have caused civilian and security personnel casualties, with both sides accusing each other of initiating hostilities.

The clashes exacerbate tensions in Aleppo, where Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh remain strategic flashpoints. The violence underscores stalled political talks between Damascus and the SDF over a March 2025 agreement to integrate SDF forces into state institutions. Analysts warn that delayed negotiations risk further destabilizing northern Syria.

While Syrian authorities claim the SDF targeted residential areas, the U.S.-backed group denies responsibility, accusing government forces of indiscriminate attacks. The conflicting narratives complicate efforts to de-escalate the situation, with residents facing heightened risks amid the deteriorating security landscape.
