Escalating conflict in Sudan's Kordofan region has displaced nearly 68,000 people since late October 2025, according to UN reports, with fresh violence this week exacerbating humanitarian needs. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs confirmed 65,000 displacements occurred between October 25 and December 30 last year, while recent clashes displaced an additional 3,000 civilians in the first days of January 2026.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric revealed a deadly drone strike killed 13 civilians in North Kordofan's capital El Obeid on Tuesday, underscoring mounting risks to non-combatants. "The UN reiterates its urgent call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and protection of civilians," Dujarric stated, emphasizing the need for unimpeded aid access.
Humanitarian organizations report critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies as displacement routes become increasingly dangerous. The International Organization for Migration documented 1,000 new displacements in South Kordofan between December 31 and January 4, with families fleeing Quoz locality and Berdab village under artillery fire.
Analysts warn the crisis could destabilize neighboring regions if fighting spreads, while aid groups scramble to establish safe corridors. With seasonal temperatures dropping, UN agencies stress the urgency of delivering winterization kits and emergency shelter to displaced populations.
