Iran Demands U.S. Release Maduro, Condemns ‘Unlawful’ Detention

Iran has called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, denouncing his detention by the United States as a violation of international law. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei accused Washington of “abducting” Maduro and his wife during a military operation in Venezuela, warning that such actions undermine global norms.

The U.S. military confirmed it transferred Maduro to face “narco-terrorism” charges in a Manhattan court this week, escalating tensions between the two nations. Baghaei emphasized Iran’s continued support for Venezuela, stating it is rooted in “principles rather than individuals,” amid deepening trade ties between the sanctioned states.

Meanwhile, protests over economic hardships in Iran have drawn threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned of a “hard” response if demonstrations turn violent. Baghaei accused the U.S. and Israel of fueling regional instability through “psychological warfare” and economic pressure campaigns.

The developments highlight growing geopolitical friction as global powers navigate complex alliances and challenges to sovereignty in 2026.
