Kherson Drone Strike Death Toll Rises to 29, Including Children

The death toll from a New Year's Eve drone strike in Ukraine's Kherson region has risen to 29 victims, including two children, according to Russian investigators. At least 60 people were injured in the attack that targeted a cafe and hotel complex in Khorly village overnight on January 1.

Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia's Investigative Committee, confirmed 15 victims remain hospitalized with three in critical condition. Forensic teams are conducting DNA analysis to identify victims, with 12 identities confirmed as of January 4, 2026.

Investigators recovered fragments of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles at the scene and are analyzing their manufacturing origins and explosive payloads. Russian authorities vowed to pursue those responsible through what they describe as an ongoing comprehensive investigation.

The attack marks one of the deadliest single incidents reported in the region since hostilities began, raising concerns about civilian infrastructure targeting. Analysts note the Kherson region remains strategically significant due to its proximity to the Dnieper River and access to Black Sea routes.
