Thailand and Cambodia Sign Landmark Ceasefire Agreement

Thailand and Cambodia finalized a historic ceasefire agreement on December 27, 2025, during the third Special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, marking a pivotal step toward stabilizing their shared border region. The deal, witnessed by ASEAN observers, follows months of escalating tensions that displaced hundreds of thousands and caused over 100 casualties this year.

Negotiations began earlier this week, with military representatives from both nations meeting December 24-26 to lay groundwork for today’s accord. This breakthrough builds on prior diplomatic efforts, including an August 7 consensus in Kuala Lumpur to freeze troop movements and an October 26 peace declaration at the ASEAN Summit.

The border conflict saw renewed intensity in early December 2025, when artillery exchanges damaged villages and critical infrastructure. While both sides previously accused each other of violating earlier agreements, today’s pact introduces enhanced verification mechanisms through ASEAN-monitored checkpoints.

Analysts note the agreement could boost investor confidence in Southeast Asia’s emerging markets. “Stability along the Thai-Cambodian border is crucial for regional trade corridors,” stated ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi during the signing ceremony.
