Denmark Summons US Envoy Over Trump’s Greenland Move

Denmark has summoned U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Howery for talks following former President Donald Trump's controversial appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland. The move, announced on December 21, 2025, reignited diplomatic tensions over U.S. interest in the Arctic territory.

Landry described his role on social media as a "volunteer to make Greenland a part of the United States," while clarifying it would not interfere with his gubernatorial duties. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized the need for all nations to respect the Kingdom of Denmark's territorial integrity, calling the appointment a reminder of "continued American interest" in Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen jointly condemned any annexation attempts, stating: "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders." The leaders reaffirmed their expectation for the U.S. to honor their sovereignty.

Greenland, which gained autonomy in 1979 but remains under Denmark's foreign and defense policy oversight, relies heavily on Danish subsidies. A January 2025 poll showed 85% of Greenland residents oppose joining the U.S., with only 6% in favor.

This development highlights growing Arctic geopolitical competition, as nations vie for influence in resource-rich regions. Analysts suggest the diplomatic row could impact U.S.-Denmark relations and Arctic security discussions in 2026.
