Australia Eyes Stricter Gun Control After Sydney Mass Shooting

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on December 15, 2025, that his government is actively considering stricter gun control measures following a deadly mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The incident, which occurred on December 14, left 15 people dead and marks Australia’s worst gun violence episode since 1996.

Authorities identified the alleged attackers as a 50-year-old father and his son, who opened fire on crowds during a busy Sunday evening. Police confirmed the father held a license permitting ownership of six firearms, all suspected to have been used in the attack. This revelation has reignited national debates about firearm regulations and public safety.

Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the urgency of reform, stating, “The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary, including tougher gun laws.” Proposed measures include limiting the number of firearms an individual can own and tightening licensing requirements. The announcement comes amid growing public pressure for legislative action to prevent future tragedies.

Australia’s last major gun law overhaul followed the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which led to a significant reduction in mass shootings. Analysts suggest the 2025 Bondi Beach attack could similarly reshape the country’s approach to firearm management, with cross-party discussions expected in early 2026.
