OpenAI Launches GPT-5.2 Amid AI Race with Google’s Gemini 3

OpenAI unveiled its GPT-5.2 artificial intelligence model on Thursday, December 11, 2025, marking its latest effort to maintain dominance in a rapidly evolving AI sector. The release follows reports of an internal "code red" declared by CEO Sam Altman in early December, redirecting resources to counter Google’s Gemini 3, which debuted in November.

The new model, available immediately for premium users, promises enhanced general intelligence, coding proficiency, and long-context understanding. OpenAI claims GPT-5.2 will deliver greater economic value through tools for spreadsheet creation, presentation design, and multi-step project management. The company also emphasized ongoing improvements to address issues like over-refusals and latency.

Google’s Gemini 3, currently leading several AI performance benchmarks, has intensified competition. Altman downplayed its impact in a CNBC interview, stating: "Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than we feared."

In a strategic move, Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, granting access to Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar characters for integration with OpenAI’s Sora video generator. Meanwhile, Microsoft-backed OpenAI confirmed it will maintain support for earlier GPT models, including GPT-5.1 and GPT-4.1.

Industry analysts note the accelerated release cycle underscores mounting pressure in the global AI market, with businesses and investors closely tracking advancements in generative AI capabilities.
