Japan’s Militarism Concerns Rise Amid Takaichi’s Taiwan Remarks

Global Experts Sound Alarm Over Japan's Strategic Shift

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments regarding the Taiwan region have drawn sharp international criticism, with analysts warning of escalating regional tensions and a dangerous shift toward militarization. The remarks come amid growing concerns about Japan's evolving security policies under its new leadership.

Historical Accountability at Stake

Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs highlighted Japan's historical aggression toward China between 1894 and 1945 during a CGTN interview, stating: "Japan has never fully reflected on its wartime history." He cautioned that increased defense spending and hawkish policies contradict Japan's long-term interests, urging Tokyo to adopt "a cautious, peace-oriented approach."

Regional Security Implications

Russian official Andrey Denisov criticized Takaichi's proposals to transform Japan's Self-Defense Forces and reconsider nuclear principles, noting: "For a nation that suffered atomic bombings, these principles are sacred." Slovak historian Eduard Chmelar echoed concerns, calling nationalist trends in Japan "deeply worrying" and urging international opposition.

Cross-Strait Stability Concerns

Experts unanimously warned that Japan's current trajectory risks destabilizing the Taiwan Strait. Sachs emphasized that China has never invaded Japan, while Denisov stated bluntly: "This approach will not work with China, especially on the Taiwan question." The developments come as regional powers monitor Japan's political direction in 2025.
