Venezuela Condemns US ‘Terrorist’ Label on ‘Nonexistent’ Cartel

The Venezuelan government has strongly rejected the United States' recent designation of the Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, calling the group "nonexistent" and denouncing the move as a pretext for intervention. Foreign Minister Yvan Gil stated via social media that Washington's November 16 announcement – set to take effect November 24 – constitutes a "vile lie" undermining national sovereignty.

Tensions escalated this year as U.S. forces reported sinking over 20 boats allegedly linked to drug trafficking since September, resulting in 80+ fatalities. While Washington frames these as counter-narcotics measures, Caracas claims they represent coercive tactics to destabilize the country. The Venezuelan statement urged the U.S. to cease "aggression and threats," vowing to protect national interests.

This development follows recent suspensions of commercial flights to Venezuela by major airlines, deepening the country's geopolitical isolation. Analysts suggest the dispute reflects broader struggles over resource control and regional influence as 2025 draws to a close.
