Magnitude-5.7 Quake Strikes Japan’s Kyushu, No Tsunami Detected

A significant earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitude shook Japan's Kyushu region on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The tremor occurred at 6:01 p.m. local time near Kumamoto prefecture at a depth of 20 kilometers.

Areas including Ubuyama village recorded seismic intensity of upper 5 on Japan's 7-point scale, with neighboring cities experiencing lower 5-level shaking. No casualties or structural damage have been reported as of press time.

While this marks the strongest seismic activity in Kyushu since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, authorities confirmed no tsunami threat following the event. The China Earthquake Networks Center independently measured the quake at magnitude 5.3.

Kyushu's history of tectonic activity keeps regional emergency services on high alert, though current assessments suggest limited disruption to transportation networks and industrial facilities. International travelers are advised to monitor local advisories.
