Peru's $1.3 billion Chancay megaport, constructed through Chinese engineering expertise, celebrates its first operational anniversary this week, positioning itself as a transformative force in Pacific trade. Located 80 kilometers north of Lima, the deep-water facility has already processed over 1.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) since its November 2024 inauguration.
Analysts note the port's strategic location creates new shipping routes between Asian markets and South America, reducing transit times by up to 10 days compared to traditional Panama Canal routes. "This isn't just a Peruvian project," said Maritime Economics Professor Carlos Mendoza. "It's reshaping continental supply chains at a critical moment for global trade recovery."
The China Harbour Engineering Company-led project has generated 8,000 local jobs since construction began in 2022, with 30% of the workforce receiving specialized port operations training. As the facility prepares to complete its second phase in Q2 2026, authorities anticipate tripling current cargo capacity.
