U.S. Urges UN Backing for Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan Amid Fragile Ceasefire

The United States has intensified efforts to rally UN Security Council support for a resolution endorsing former President Donald Trump's Gaza peace initiative, warning of "grave consequences" for Palestinians if diplomatic momentum falters. The proposal comes as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its second month, with recent progress including the return of 24 hostages' remains to Israel since October 2025.

Fragile Ceasefire Progress

While Israel confirmed the recovery of another hostage's remains via the Red Cross this week, three bodies remain in Hamas custody. Analysts caution that the current truce only addresses temporary measures, with deeper challenges like Hamas disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawals awaiting resolution in subsequent phases.

A New Draft Resolution

The U.S.-backed draft resolution proposes establishing a transitional "Board of Peace" to govern Gaza until 2027, supported by an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to oversee demilitarization and humanitarian corridors. Unlike previous versions, the text acknowledges potential Palestinian statehood contingent on governmental reforms and reconstruction progress.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about the resolution's adoption, telling reporters: "We're making good progress on the language…hopefully we'll have action soon." However, Security Council members reportedly seek clearer oversight mechanisms and operational details about the ISF's mandate.
