Brake Failure Claims Disputed as Police Investigate Bucheon Tragedy
A devastating truck collision at a bustling market in Bucheon, South Korea, claimed two lives and injured 18 people on Thursday. The incident occurred at 10:55 a.m. local time when the vehicle reversed 28 meters before accelerating approximately 150 meters through pedestrian areas.
The victims included two women in their 70s, while three critically injured patients remain unconscious. Authorities arrested the 60-year-old driver, who claimed brake failure caused the accident. However, preliminary police investigations suggest he may have mistakenly pressed the accelerator.
"This tragedy highlights urgent questions about road safety in commercial zones," said a Bucheon police spokesperson. Forensic teams are currently analyzing vehicle mechanics and witness accounts to determine the exact cause.
The market, located west of Seoul, has temporarily closed as officials assess structural damage. This incident follows renewed national discussions about aging drivers' road readiness, with South Korea's transport ministry reporting 23% of licensed drivers were over 65 in 2025.
