Cuba-China Scientific Ties Celebrated at Neuroscience Event

Cuban and Chinese researchers gathered at Havana's Neurosciences Center this week to commemorate a decade of cross-border collaboration, highlighted by a documentary premiere honoring renowned neuroscientist Pedro Valdes. The event underscored deepening scientific cooperation between the two nations amid global technological competition.

Valdes, whose work in the Chinese mainland since 2015 has advanced neuroimaging research, received China's prestigious International Science and Technology Cooperation Award in 2023. Chinese Premier Li Qiang recognized his contributions to joint projects developing early Alzheimer's detection methods.

"This partnership shows how science transcends borders," said Dr. María López, director of Cuba's Neurosciences Center, during the screening. "Professor Valdes' work exemplifies our shared commitment to addressing humanity's greatest health challenges."

The documentary chronicles Valdes' development of portable brain monitoring devices now used in rural clinics across Asia and Latin America. Chinese Embassy representatives emphasized plans to expand bilateral research exchanges through new funding initiatives announced earlier this year.
