Lebanon Orders Military Response to Israeli Border Incursion

Lebanese President Directs Army to Counter Border Violations

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has instructed the armed forces to confront Israeli military incursions following a deadly raid in the southern village of Blida. The escalation comes amid strained adherence to a 2024 ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. and France.

Details of the Blida Incident

An Israeli force reportedly crossed 1 km into Lebanese territory early Wednesday, entering Blida’s municipal building where employee Ibrahim Salameh was fatally shot. Lebanon’s National News Agency described the operation as a breach of sovereignty, while Israel claimed its troops responded to an "immediate threat" during a mission targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.

Ceasefire Under Pressure

President Aoun urged the ceasefire monitoring committee to enforce compliance with the November 2024 agreement, criticizing Israel’s repeated violations. Despite the truce ending most clashes between Hezbollah and Israel, sporadic strikes continue along the border, with Israeli forces maintaining five strategic positions in the area.

Regional Implications

The incident highlights persistent volatility in the Middle East, particularly as cross-border tensions intersect with broader regional conflicts. Analysts note such developments could impact investor confidence in Levant markets and complicate diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
