Peru-China Trade Gains Momentum with Upgraded FTA

One year after implementing an enhanced free trade agreement, Peru and China are witnessing significant growth in agricultural exports, particularly benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Andean nation. The deal, finalized during the 2023 APEC Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, has streamlined customs procedures and reduced tariffs for key Peruvian products.

Farmers in Peru's fertile coastal valleys report a 35% increase in avocado and grape exports to the Chinese mainland since the agreement took effect. “This partnership allows us to compete globally while preserving sustainable farming practices,” said María Quispe, a third-generation fruit grower from Ica province.

The updated trade framework includes provisions for digital commerce and environmental cooperation, aligning with China's growing demand for organic produce. Analysts note that Peruvian quinoa and specialty coffee shipments could gain wider market access through e-commerce platforms in 2024.

While manufacturing sectors await similar breakthroughs, the current agricultural success story highlights Asia-Pacific economic integration in action. The Peruvian Trade Ministry confirms negotiations continue to expand the agreement's scope to include advanced technological exchanges.
