Chongqing and Incheon Strengthen Ties Through Youth Football Exchange

As the Asia-Pacific region prepares for the 2025 APEC Leaders’ Meeting in South Korea, Chongqing and Incheon are writing a new chapter in their 16-year sister-city partnership. The Chinese metropolis and South Korea’s strategic port city have expanded cooperation beyond traditional economic sectors into youth development programs.

This summer saw three youth football teams from Chongqing participate in a cultural exchange hosted by Incheon Tourism Organization. The initiative builds on existing collaborations in trade and infrastructure that have flourished since the cities formalized ties in 2007. Observers note such grassroots exchanges help cultivate mutual understanding ahead of major regional diplomatic events.

Educational institutions in both cities are developing joint programs focused on urban sustainability and smart logistics – fields where Chongqing’s manufacturing capabilities complement Incheon’s transportation expertise. Tourism authorities report a 12% year-on-year increase in cross-visitations since pandemic restrictions eased.
