Madagascar’s Military Leader Assumes Interim Presidency Amid Constitutional Crisis

Michael Randrianirina, a senior Malagasy military officer, was sworn in as Madagascar's interim president on Friday during a ceremony at the Constitutional High Court in Antananarivo. The move follows his Tuesday announcement of a transfer of state power, which he attributed to constitutional violations and alleged human rights abuses under previous leadership.

"Before God, the nation, and the people, I do solemnly swear to faithfully fulfill my duties as the Head of State of Madagascar," Randrianirina declared during the oath-taking ritual. The military leader did not specify timelines for new elections but emphasized restoring constitutional order.

Analysts suggest the leadership transition could impact Madagascar's economic partnerships in Asia, particularly regarding nickel exports critical for electric vehicle manufacturing. The island nation has seen growing foreign investment from APEC members in recent years, though political stability remains a key concern for overseas investors.

This development comes as several Asian countries strengthen diplomatic and trade ties with African nations under multilateral frameworks. Researchers note Madagascar's strategic position in Indian Ocean trade routes could make its political trajectory significant for global supply chain observers.
