Israel Warns of Renewed Gaza Offensive as Hamas Struggles to Retrieve Hostage Remains

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning on Wednesday, declaring that military operations in Gaza would resume unless Hamas fulfills its obligations under the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. The ultimatum comes as Hamas claims it cannot retrieve additional hostage remains without specialized equipment, raising tensions in the fragile truce.

Ceasefire Progress and Challenges

Since Monday, Hamas has returned 20 living hostages to Israel in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners under the agreement mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump. While eight deceased hostages' remains have been transferred, Hamas' armed wing stated Wednesday's handover of two bodies would be its 'last for now,' citing the need for heavy machinery to recover others buried under Gaza's rubble.

Military Preparations Intensify

Katz instructed Israel Defense Forces leadership to prepare a 'comprehensive plan to defeat Hamas' during Wednesday's security meeting. The defense minister emphasized coordination with Washington, stating renewed operations would aim to 'change the reality in Gaza' if the militant group fails to comply.

Humanitarian Aid at Stake

The impasse increases pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to link humanitarian assistance to Gaza with hostage recovery efforts. Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has threatened to block aid shipments unless all remains are returned, highlighting domestic political tensions.

As international observers monitor the situation, the coming days will test whether diplomatic channels can sustain the ceasefire or if renewed conflict becomes inevitable.
