U.S. Tariffs, Domestic Slump Challenge Belgian Brewers

Belgium's renowned breweries face a dual challenge as U.S. tariffs and weakening domestic demand threaten their centuries-old tradition of beer craftsmanship. A 15% duty on exports to America, coupled with new aluminum can taxes, has forced producers to reconsider pricing strategies while maintaining global competitiveness.

The timing proves particularly bitter as Brussels recently hosted its 25th annual beer festival, showcasing 570 varieties from 57 brewers in the UNESCO-listed Grand Place. Michiel Clyncke, Co-CEO of Kasteel Brewery Vanhonsebrouck, told CGTN: "We must balance affordability with creative solutions to keep U.S. consumers engaged with Belgian beer culture."

With $4 billion in European beer entering U.S. markets in 2024 alone, the tariffs impact trade dynamics beyond Belgium's borders. However, industry data reveals deeper concerns as local consumption patterns shift, leaving brewers to navigate both international trade tensions and evolving domestic tastes.
