Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited tensions with Afghanistan by demanding the return of Bagram Airbase, threatening unspecified consequences if his ultimatum goes unheeded. The controversial remarks, posted on Trump's Truth Social platform, drew swift condemnation from Afghan authorities who pledged to resist any foreign military reoccupiation.
"We want it back, and we want it back soon," Trump told reporters at the White House, claiming ongoing negotiations about the strategic airfield. Afghan officials immediately rejected the proposition, with Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid declaring: "We are ready to fight you for another 20 years."
The 64-square-kilometer Bagram Airbase, once the largest U.S. military installation in Afghanistan, became a symbol of foreign presence during the 20-year conflict. Its abrupt abandonment in 2021 left billions of dollars worth of equipment behind, now under Taliban control.
