Gaza Crisis Deepens as Israel Targets Hamas Leaders in Qatar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted Saturday that eliminating Hamas leaders based in Qatar is critical to securing a ceasefire and releasing hostages in Gaza. His remarks followed Israeli airstrikes in Doha, which Qatar condemned, stating the attack killed a member of its security forces and five Hamas members, including the son of exiled Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya.

Ceasefire Stalemate

Netanyahu accused Hamas leaders in Qatar of prolonging the war by rejecting ceasefire proposals, claiming they prioritize conflict over Gaza's civilians. Hamas, however, called the strikes an attempt to derail negotiations, reiterating demands for a permanent truce and Palestinian statehood as prerequisites for releasing hostages.

Humanitarian Catastrophe

Gaza's health authorities report nearly 65,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, with 45 killed in Saturday's attacks alone. UNRWA described Gaza City as a "catastrophic" zone, citing relentless airstrikes and mass displacement. Over 350,000 residents have fled eastern Gaza City since August, according to local officials, as Israel expands military operations.

International Concerns

Qatar, a key mediator, condemned the Doha strikes, while the UN urged an immediate end to hostilities. Israel maintains its offensive aims to dismantle Hamas, urging civilians to evacuate via designated routes. Critics, however, argue the campaign has caused disproportionate civilian harm, with Gaza's Civil Defense accusing Israel of targeting shelters and residential areas.

The conflict, triggered by Hamas' October 7 attack on southern Israel, remains deadlocked, with no clear path to resolution.
