Israeli forces struck a residential tower in Gaza City on Wednesday, escalating military operations amid stalled ceasefire negotiations. The Tayba II Tower, located near the densely populated Rimal neighborhood, was destroyed after residents received less than an hour’s evacuation warning. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed the building housed Hamas intelligence equipment used to monitor troop movements.
Expanding Offensive
This strike follows Israel’s unprecedented attempt to target senior Hamas figures in Qatar on Tuesday, part of Operation “Fire Summit.” Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to pursue Hamas leaders globally, stating: “There is no place for them to hide.” He reiterated demands for Hamas to release all hostages and disarm to end the conflict, warning of further destruction in Gaza otherwise.
Ceasefire Talks Stalled
Qatar, a key mediator, suspended negotiations after the attack on its soil, calling it a “pivotal moment” for regional stability. The White House distanced itself from the decision, with former U.S. President Donald Trump stating he was “not thrilled” and emphasizing the move was “made by Prime Minister Netanyahu.” EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen condemned the escalation, proposing sanctions on Israeli ministers linked to the offensive.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Gaza health authorities report over 64,000 fatalities since the conflict began, with widespread infrastructure damage and famine risks growing. International criticism mounts as Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, defended the strikes, asserting: “We don’t always act in the interests of the United States.”
Analysts warn the expanded campaign could further destabilize the region, with Qatar reserving the right to respond and Hamas leaders remaining defiant.
