Hamas Claims Negotiating Team Survives Israeli Strike in Doha Amid Ceasefire Talks

Israeli warplanes conducted an unprecedented airstrike in Qatar's capital, Doha, on Tuesday, targeting a building housing senior Hamas officials. Israeli authorities described the operation as an attempt to assassinate leaders of the group, which it designates as a terrorist organization. Hamas confirmed the attack occurred during discussions on a U.S.-mediated ceasefire proposal but stated its negotiating team survived.

In a statement, Hamas reported six fatalities, including the son of top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, and reiterated its demands: an immediate end to hostilities, full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, a prisoner exchange, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction. The group emphasized the strike would not alter its position.

The Israeli military and Shin Bet security agency jointly claimed responsibility, asserting the strike targeted leaders "directly responsible" for the October 7 attacks. They cited "precise munitions and intelligence" to minimize civilian harm. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "wholly independent Israeli operation," underscoring national responsibility.

An anonymous Israeli official told Xinhua that over a dozen warplanes and at least 10 bombs were used, with preparations spanning months. The attack marks a significant escalation in Israel's campaign against Hamas, raising questions about regional stability and the future of U.S.-brokered negotiations.
