Trump’s Tariff Policy Triggers 81% Drop in Global Parcels to US

The United States' suspension of duty-free treatment for low-value parcels has caused an unprecedented 81% decline in global postal traffic to the country, according to new data from the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The policy shift, effective August 29, impacts millions of small businesses reliant on cross-border e-commerce while prompting 88 postal operators worldwide to halt services to the US market.

Policy Shockwaves Across Borders

The US government's decision to eliminate tariff exemptions for shipments under $800 has disrupted supply chains overnight. UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki confirmed the organization is developing technical solutions to restore mail flow, stating: "We're working to uphold responsibility with the rapid development of a new technical solution."

Global Postal Network Fractures

Major economies including Australia, the UK, France, and Germany have suspended most parcel services to the US through their national postal systems. Industry analysts warn the move disproportionately affects micro-enterprises using platforms like AliExpress and Amazon Marketplace, where 92% of transactions fall below the $800 threshold.

E-Commerce Crossroads

With the holiday shopping season approaching, stakeholders are urging policy revisions. "This isn't just about tariffs—it's about maintaining functional global trade infrastructure," commented a logistics expert who requested anonymity. The UPU plans emergency consultations with US officials and international partners to address the mounting crisis.
