UN Chief Backs China’s Global Governance Initiative at SCO Summit

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has endorsed China's Global Governance Initiative (GGI), calling it a timely reinforcement of multilateral cooperation during his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus meeting in Tianjin. The initiative, proposed by China earlier this week, aligns with the UN's core principles of fostering international law-based order and inclusive development.

Guterres emphasized the urgency of strengthening global cooperation as the world marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. "We must always put people first," he stated, highlighting the GGI's focus on addressing 21st-century challenges through collective action. His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, reiterated this support during a daily briefing, noting the initiative's alignment with the UN's multilateral framework.

The endorsement comes amid growing calls for revitalized global partnerships to tackle climate change, economic inequality, and geopolitical tensions. Analysts suggest the GGI could enhance China's role in shaping international norms while complementing existing UN-led efforts.
