Israel Intensifies Gaza City Offensive as Famine Deaths Surge

Israeli forces have escalated military operations in Gaza City despite growing international concern over civilian casualties and worsening famine conditions, with local health authorities reporting 281 starvation-related deaths since March.

Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed Sunday that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would continue its ground and air campaign, stating: "The IDF is acting and will continue to act with full force to defeat Hamas, to secure the release of all the hostages, and to bring the war to an end under the conditions set by Israel."

Recent IDF operations focused on Jabaliya in northern Gaza aim to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and prevent regrouping of fighters, according to military statements. The offensive follows Friday's ultimatum from Katz warning of Gaza City's destruction unless Hamas accepts Israel's terms for hostage releases and permanent security control.

Gaza health officials reported eight new famine deaths in 24 hours, including one child, bringing total starvation fatalities to 114 children among 281 documented cases. The territory's cumulative death toll from military operations since October 2023 now exceeds 62,000 according to local authorities.

Humanitarian organizations continue sounding alarms over collapsed medical infrastructure and food distribution systems as combat expands into new areas. The developments come amid stalled international mediation efforts to address both military and humanitarian dimensions of the conflict.
