Israel Launches Military Operation in Gaza City Amid Truce Talks

Israel's military has initiated preliminary operations to take control of Gaza City, escalating tensions in a conflict now approaching its second year. Brigadier General Effie Defrin confirmed troops are positioned on the outskirts of the city, describing Hamas as a "battered and bruised" force while vowing to deepen attacks on what Israel calls a "stronghold of governmental and military terror."

The move comes as mediators push for a 60-day ceasefire proposal backed by Hamas, which would involve hostage-prisoner exchanges. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, however, faces pressure from coalition allies to reject temporary pauses and prioritize territorial control. Over 75% of Gaza is already under Israeli military control.

Hamas accused Netanyahu of obstructing peace efforts, stating his actions prove "disregard for mediators' proposals." Meanwhile, clashes intensified Wednesday near Khan Younis, with Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades claiming a multi-hour engagement involving tunnel ambushes and suicide attacks.

With tens of thousands of reservists called up and operations expected to expand through September, international allies urge restraint amid concerns over civilian displacement. The Security Cabinet recently approved plans to seize Gaza City, where urban warfare defined the conflict's early stages.
