Modi, Wang Yi Discuss China-India Ties, Stress Cooperation Over Rivalry

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China's Wang Yi, a senior Chinese Communist Party official, emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation during a high-profile meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday. The talks, described as a pivotal step in stabilizing relations, focused on shared economic goals, boundary dispute management, and the broader role of Asia in global development.

Partners, Not Rivals

Modi highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, citing their ancient civilizations and the Kazan meeting in October 2023 as a turning point. He stressed that India and China are "partners, not rivals," with aligned interests in accelerating growth and addressing global challenges. "The world sees the potential of our cooperation," Modi said, urging expanded exchanges to build mutual trust.

Managing Differences

Addressing longstanding boundary disputes, Modi called for pragmatic solutions to prevent conflicts. Both sides agreed on the need to approach disagreements with a "long-term perspective," particularly as 2024 marks 75 years of diplomatic relations. Wang Yi reiterated China's commitment to peaceful dialogue, aligning with Modi's vision of an "Asian century" driven by collaboration.

Eye on Regional Leadership

Modi confirmed his attendance at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, signaling India's proactive role in Eurasian geopolitics. Analysts view the meeting as a strategic effort to balance competition with economic pragmatism, particularly in trade and infrastructure initiatives across Asia.
