China Returns to FIBA Asia Cup Final After Decade-Long Wait

China's basketball team reignited its continental dominance with a thrilling 98-84 semifinal victory over New Zealand at the FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah on Saturday, securing its first championship game appearance since 2014. The 16-time champions overcame past quarterfinal exits in 2017 and 2022, having previously ended a five-year knockout drought by defeating the Republic of Korea 79-71 earlier this week.

Captain Zhao Rui spearheaded China's aggressive start, orchestrating an early 10-7 lead through precise assists to Hu Jinqiu and personal scoring efforts. A decisive 13-0 run led by Gao Shiyan, Liao Sanning, and Lei Meng closed the first quarter at 28-19. New Zealand countered with defensive pressure in the second quarter, holding China scoreless for four minutes while narrowing the gap to 42-40 at halftime.

The victory marks a resurgence for China's basketball program, which last claimed the Asia Cup title in 2015. Analysts note improved teamwork and strategic adaptability under new coaching staff as key factors in this year's success. The team now prepares for Sunday's final against either Australia or Japan, promising a high-stakes conclusion to the tournament.
