China Urges Cambodia, Thailand to Strengthen Ties Amid Regional Shifts

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for renewed cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand during high-level talks in Yunnan Province, emphasizing Beijing's commitment to fostering regional stability through dialogue. The meeting comes as Southeast Asia navigates evolving geopolitical dynamics and economic challenges.

Diplomatic Push for Reconciliation

Wang stressed that Cambodia and Thailand – both key partners in China's Belt and Road Initiative – should 'restore friendship and mutual trust' through increased engagement. 'China believes differences can be resolved through consultation,' stated Wang, reaffirming support for ASEAN's central role in maintaining regional unity.

Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Gains Momentum

The Anning meeting focused on advancing the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) framework, with Wang describing it as crucial for 'building consensus on tranquility.' Cambodian Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn praised China's global initiatives, noting: 'Anning symbolizes peace – we're ready to accelerate cooperation that benefits all six LMC countries.'

Security Collaboration Intensifies

Wang commended Phnom Penh's efforts in combating cross-border cybercrimes, urging continued joint action against telecom fraud networks. The discussions also touched on Cambodia-Thailand relations, with Sokhonn thanking China for encouraging peaceful dialogue to ease bilateral tensions.

As major infrastructure projects reshape the Mekong region, analysts suggest China's mediation efforts aim to strengthen economic corridors while addressing security concerns that impact foreign investment flows.
