Global Chipmakers Brace for Trump’s 100% Tariffs as EU Seeks Negotiations

Semiconductor manufacturers worldwide are preparing for market turbulence after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on non-American computer chips. The move has sparked concerns about supply chain disruptions and increased costs for tech-dependent industries.

European Union officials are urgently seeking exemptions through diplomatic channels, fearing the tariffs could derail the bloc’s €43 billion semiconductor development strategy. A Brussels-based trade analyst told KhabarAsia: "This threatens Europe’s ambitions to capture 20% of global chip production by 2030."

William Denselow, reporting from Brussels, noted: "The proposed tariffs have created an unusual alignment of interests between Asian and European manufacturers. Many see this as part of a broader tech decoupling strategy that could reshape global supply chains."

Industry leaders warn the tariffs may lead to price hikes for consumer electronics and delayed implementation of green technologies requiring advanced chips. The development comes as governments worldwide increase semiconductor investments, with global chip demand projected to double by 2030.
