Gaza Ceasefire Talks to Resume Amid Stalled Negotiations

Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas are set to restart next week following a critical review period, according to an Egyptian security official familiar with the talks. The discussions, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S., aim to address key demands from both sides after months of stalled diplomacy.

Hamas recently submitted revised conditions for a truce, including requests for the release of specific Palestinian figures and clarity on Israeli military withdrawal plans from Gaza. Mediators have urged adjustments to these demands to secure Israel’s approval. A contentious point remains the reopening of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery, which Israel is still evaluating.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff criticized Hamas this week for showing a “lack of desire to reach a ceasefire,” a claim the group swiftly rejected. Hamas officials emphasized their commitment to dialogue, stating their engagement is “solely aimed at halting hostilities.”

The conflict, triggered by Hamas-led attacks in October 2023, has claimed over 59,210 Palestinian lives, according to local health authorities. Observers warn that prolonged delays in negotiations risk further destabilizing the region.
