China Rejects U.S. Xinjiang Claims at UN Security Council Debate

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, delivered a forceful rebuttal to U.S. allegations regarding the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during a UN Security Council open debate on Thursday. The session focused on cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Fu condemned what he called "groundless accusations" from U.S. representatives, emphasizing that Xinjiang currently experiences "social stability, economic prosperity, and improved livelihoods." He described the region as undergoing its "best period of development" amid increased international engagement.

"The U.S. scheme to contain China through the Xinjiang issue has bankrupted," Fu stated, noting that over 100 countries – including numerous Islamic states – have supported China's position at UN forums since 2018. These nations have collectively opposed "politicizing human rights issues to interfere in domestic affairs," according to the envoy.

Addressing broader human rights concerns, Fu challenged U.S. priorities: "If truly concerned about Muslim rights, why ignore Gaza's humanitarian crisis? Why overlook historical injustices against Palestinians?" He criticized Washington for domestic issues including gun violence and racial discrimination while "interfering in developing nations' affairs under human rights pretenses."

The exchange highlights growing tensions in multilateral diplomacy as developing nations increasingly shape global discourse. Fu concluded by urging the U.S. to "reflect on its wrongdoings and contribute practically to international peace."
