China-EU Climate Pact Gains UN Backing Ahead of COP30

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has endorsed renewed climate collaboration between China and the European Union, calling their partnership 'critical' to achieving breakthroughs at next year's COP30 summit in Brazil. The announcement comes as global stakeholders intensify efforts to meet Paris Agreement targets.

In a Thursday statement, Guterres emphasized that the world's two largest economies must lead by example: 'Their joint commitment to a just transition could accelerate decarbonization across industries while supporting developing nations.' The UN chief specifically highlighted the need for economy-wide 2035 emissions targets aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

The push aligns with last year's First Global Stocktake agreement to phase out fossil fuels, with Guterres urging all G20 members to present ambitious national climate plans (NDCs) ahead of the November 2025 summit. Analysts suggest China-EU cooperation on green technology and carbon markets could create ripple effects across Asian supply chains.
