Cambodia-Thailand Border Clashes Claim 12 Lives, Spark War Crime Allegations

At least 11 Thai civilians and one soldier have been killed in renewed border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, according to Thai Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin. The violence erupted Thursday near disputed territories, marking one of the deadliest escalations in recent years.

Somsak condemned Cambodia's military actions during a press briefing, alleging an attack on a hospital violated international norms. "Targeting medical facilities crosses a red line," he stated, urging global attention to what he called "potential war crimes."

Cambodian authorities have yet to respond to the allegations. The clashes revive longstanding tensions over temple complexes and rural border zones that have fueled periodic confrontations since 2008.

Analysts warn the conflict could destabilize ASEAN's efforts to promote regional cooperation. "This escalation tests diplomatic channels at a critical time for Southeast Asian security," said Chulalongkorn University political scientist Arunrat Chaiyapong.

Tourism operators report cancellations in border provinces, while humanitarian groups call for protected corridors to evacuate trapped villagers. Thailand has deployed emergency medical teams to treat 34 injured civilians.
