WHO Condemns Israeli Military Strike on Gaza Staff Residence

The World Health Organization (WHO) has accused the Israeli military of attacking its staff residence and main warehouse in Gaza's Deir al-Balah, severely disrupting humanitarian operations. The agency reported three airstrikes on Monday caused fires, structural damage, and forced evacuations under active conflict conditions.

Humanitarian Operations Disrupted

WHO stated that Israeli forces handcuffed and interrogated male staff at gunpoint, detaining two employees and two family members. While three were later released, one staff member remains in custody. "WHO demands the immediate release of the detained staff and protection of all its personnel," Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

IDF Responds to Allegations

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed troops responded to gunfire in the area, emphasizing prior evacuation warnings. "Individuals suspected of terrorism were temporarily screened for concealed weapons," the IDF stated, adding that detainees were released after questioning.

Deir al-Balah Under Pressure

Once a refuge for displaced Palestinians, Deir al-Balah has seen intensified military activity since Monday. Local medics reported tank shelling killed at least three people and damaged homes. WHO's main warehouse—critical for medical supplies—was also hit Sunday, triggering explosions and fire.

Broader Conflict Context

The strike comes as Britain and 20 nations call for an immediate Gaza ceasefire, citing Israel's "ineffective aid delivery model." Over 59,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, according to Gaza health officials, with WHO describing the territory's health system as "on its knees."
