Russia and DPRK Strengthen Ties as Lavrov Meets Kim Jong Un

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Kim Jong Un, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), in Wonsan on Saturday, hailing bilateral relations as an "invincible fighting brotherhood" amid deepening strategic cooperation. The meeting underscores growing diplomatic alignment between Moscow and Pyongyang, following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the DPRK in 2023.

Lavrov emphasized the importance of "strategic dialogue," noting that ongoing high-level engagements reflect commitments to implement agreements between Kim and Putin. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Putin seeks further direct communication with the DPRK leader in the near future.

Earlier, Lavrov held talks with DPRK Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, focusing on bilateral collaboration, cultural exchanges, and regional security. Lavrov praised historical military cooperation, referencing the "heroic servicemen" of the Korean People's Army who fought alongside Russian forces during World War II.

The visit comes as both nations upgrade their partnership, including a mutual defense pact. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed plans for additional high-level delegations to the DPRK later this year, signaling sustained momentum in ties.

Lavrov arrived in Wonsan after attending the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, highlighting Russia's dual focus on Asian diplomacy and strategic alliances.
