Western Europe Sizzles Through Hottest June on Record

Western Europe endured its hottest June since records began, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, with back-to-back heatwaves pushing temperatures to unprecedented levels. The region's 'extreme' conditions highlight accelerating climate trends as global temperatures marked the third-warmest June ever recorded.

Daily averages in western Europe soared to historic highs, with Spain and Portugal hitting 46°C (115°F) in some areas. 'Feels-like' temperatures – combining heat and humidity – reached 48°C near Lisbon, creating 'extreme heat stress' conditions for millions. Scientists attribute the intensity to heat domes trapping warm air, exacerbating wildfires and coastal humidity through record Mediterranean sea temperatures of 27°C (81°F).

'The impact has been exceptional,' said Copernicus Strategic Lead Samantha Burgess, noting marine ecosystems faced dual pressures from warming waters and reduced nighttime cooling. The western Mediterranean saw surface temperatures up to 5°C above average, disrupting coastal climates and marine life.

This June continues a global warming pattern, following 2024's hottest and 2023's second-hottest June records. Europe's warming rate – faster than the global average – underscores regional vulnerability to climate shifts. Analysts warn such heatwaves may become routine, urging adaptive strategies for public health and environmental management.
