Iran Urges UN to Label U.S., Israel as Aggressors Amid Escalation

Iran has formally called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to designate the U.S. and Israel as aggressors following a series of military confrontations, escalating tensions in the Middle East. In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UNSC President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused both nations of violating international law through targeted strikes on civilian infrastructure and nuclear facilities.

Araghchi emphasized that Israel’s June 13 airstrikes, which reportedly killed civilians and scientists, and the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear sites on June 22 constituted "grave breaches" of the UN Charter and non-proliferation agreements. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets and a strike on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. A ceasefire took effect Tuesday after 12 days of hostilities.

The Iranian minister urged the UNSC to hold the "aggressors" accountable, warning that unchecked actions risk destabilizing global security. Analysts note the appeal highlights growing pressure on multilateral institutions to address escalating regional conflicts, with implications for energy markets and diplomatic relations across Asia.

While the UN has yet to respond, the situation underscores fragile peace dynamics in the Middle East, a critical concern for investors and policymakers monitoring Asia’s interconnected economic and security landscape.
