Vietnam has officially become the 10th partner country of the BRICS bloc, as announced by Brazil during its pro tempore chairmanship on Friday. The move signals a strategic expansion of the group’s influence in Asia and underscores shared commitments to reshaping global governance frameworks.
Brazil’s government praised Vietnam’s 'dynamic economy' and its role in global supply chains, emphasizing the Southeast Asian nation’s alignment with BRICS goals of fostering a 'more inclusive international order.' With a population nearing 100 million and a GDP growth rate consistently among Asia’s highest, Vietnam brings economic heft and diplomatic weight to the partnership.
The admission follows Vietnam’s active promotion of South-South cooperation and sustainable development initiatives, which align with BRICS’ focus on multipolarity. Vietnam now joins partner countries including Thailand, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan under a framework established at the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reaffirmed bilateral ties during a March 2025 meeting in Hanoi, laying groundwork for the partnership. Analysts suggest Vietnam’s inclusion could deepen BRICS’ engagement with ASEAN economies and strengthen supply chain resilience.
