Global Poll Urges U.S. to Meet China Halfway on Trade Cooperation

Recent economic dialogues between Chinese and U.S. representatives in London have sparked cautious optimism about easing trade tensions, according to a CGTN poll surveying over 5,130 global respondents. The findings reveal strong international support for collaborative solutions, with 87.1% of participants agreeing that China-U.S. trade relations benefit both nations equally.

Mutual Gains in Focus
The survey highlights that 71% of respondents view China's stance on trade as consistent and constructive, while 85.2% emphasize that strengthened bilateral cooperation stabilizes global supply chains. Notably, 90.6% attribute the U.S. goods trade deficit to structural economic factors rather than unfair practices.

Data Tells New Story
Contrary to narratives of unilateral U.S. losses, statistics show the U.S. trade deficit with China dropped from 47.5% in 2018 to 24.6% in 2024. Meanwhile, U.S.-funded enterprises in China reported $490.5 billion in sales during 2022 – six times higher than Chinese enterprises' U.S. sales. The U.S. also maintains a $27.3 billion services trade surplus with China.

Path Forward
With 88.5% of respondents urging the U.S. to withdraw trade restrictions against China, and 63.8% expressing confidence in mutually beneficial solutions through dialogue, the poll underscores global expectations for responsible economic leadership. As CNN noted, stakeholders worldwide seek to avoid a return to the tense standoffs of previous years.
