Gaza’s Al-Amal Hospital Nears Collapse as WHO Warns of Healthcare Crisis

The Al-Amal Hospital in Gaza, one of the last functioning medical facilities in the region, is now "virtually out of service" due to escalating military activity, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Monday. The hospital’s closure leaves thousands without critical care amid ongoing conflict.

"Access to the hospital is obstructed, preventing new patients from reaching care, and leading to more preventable deaths," Tedros stated on social media platform X. He emphasized that two emergency medical teams—one local and one international—are struggling to treat remaining patients with dwindling supplies.

With Al-Amal non-operational, the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis remains the sole facility with an intensive care unit. Both hospitals have faced severe shortages of medicines and equipment since Israel imposed a total blockade two months ago, according to a June 5 WHO report.

While Israeli authorities recently permitted limited humanitarian aid into Gaza, Tedros stressed that current deliveries fall far short of addressing the crisis. The WHO has repeatedly called for urgent international intervention to prevent further loss of life.
