California Challenges Federal Guard Deployment as Sovereignty Breach

California Files Lawsuit Over National Guard Mobilization

California has accused the U.S. federal government of violating state sovereignty and federal law through the deployment of National Guard troops during recent protests, according to a lawsuit filed Monday. The state claims the Trump administration’s mobilization of approximately 700 Marines to Los Angeles lacked legal justification, with Governor Gavin Newsom stating he received notice of plans to send an additional 2,000 guard personnel.

Tensions escalated after President Trump activated the National Guard on June 7 amid protests triggered by immigration enforcement actions in Southern California. Democratic leaders have criticized the move as an inflammatory overreach, arguing it risks exacerbating civil unrest.

U.S. Northern Command confirmed the troop deployments but did not comment on pending litigation. The case highlights growing friction between state and federal authorities over emergency response protocols.
