China Urges Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Escalating Tensions

China has intensified its call for diplomatic solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, warning that increased weapon deployments risk prolonging hostilities. At a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, Chinese envoy Geng Shuang emphasized that escalating military confrontations "run counter to the common expectations of the international community" and undermine ceasefire efforts.

Peace Over Provocation

Geng, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, urged all parties to "forge an atmosphere conducive to peace talks" rather than persisting with attacks. His remarks came as Russia and Ukraine prepare for a second round of direct negotiations following recent prisoner exchanges in Istanbul. "China welcomes these positive developments," Geng stated, while stressing the need to address the conflict’s root causes through dialogue.

Rejecting ‘Political Manipulation’

The envoy strongly rebutted U.S. allegations about China’s role in the conflict, calling them "utter political manipulation." He clarified that China has never supplied lethal weapons to either side and maintains strict controls on dual-use items. "The U.S. bears major responsibility for the conflict’s continuation," Geng added, urging Washington to focus on diplomacy instead of "boring blame games."

Humanitarian Priorities

Geng reiterated China’s consistent stance since the crisis began: prioritizing civilian protection, adhering to international humanitarian law, and avoiding attacks on infrastructure. He affirmed China’s commitment to collaborate with the Global South and the international community to advance "real peace" through constructive engagement.
