U.S. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV

The Vatican announced on Tuesday the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States as the new head of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The 66-year-old cleric was chosen during a conclave of 133 cardinals held in Vatican City, concluding two days of voting following the passing of former Pope Francis on April 21.

The historic election marks the first time a U.S.-born cardinal has ascended to the papacy. Prevost, former prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, is widely recognized for his theological scholarship and multilingual communication skills. His selection reflects the Church’s ongoing efforts to balance tradition with global engagement.

The transition comes at a pivotal moment for the Vatican, which maintains significant diplomatic and cultural ties across Asia. Analysts suggest Pope Leo XIV’s leadership may influence interfaith dialogue and humanitarian initiatives in regions with large Catholic populations, such as the Philippines, India, and Vietnam.
