East Midlands Airport (EMA), a key logistics hub in the UK, is cementing its role in global trade after securing landmark agreements with Chinese cargo giants Central Airlines and YunExpress. The deals mark the first UK operations for both firms, with initial twice-weekly Boeing 777 freighter flights set to expand to five weekly services, amplifying EMA’s $1.6 billion annual trade flow with China.
Strategic Location and Growing Partnerships
EMA’s central UK location and 24/7 operations—rare among major airports—position it as a critical node for rapid distribution. "Goods flown in here can reach nationwide markets within hours," said Ioan Reed-Aspley, EMA’s Head of Corporate Affairs. The airport’s efficiency has also attracted British operator One Air, which relocated from Heathrow last year and plans to launch new China-bound routes via Hong Kong and Muscat.
Addressing Trade Imbalances
Despite booming inbound volumes, up to 110 tonnes of cargo space on return flights to Asia often go unused. EMA is collaborating with local businesses to fill this gap, while developing a technology hub to help UK firms access Chinese markets. Redevelopment of nearby sites, including a former power station, aims to create advanced logistics and manufacturing clusters.
"We’re building infrastructure to support larger cargo operations and long-term economic growth," emphasized Stephan Richeux, EMA’s Head of Media. As global demand for swift logistics surges, EMA’s strategic upgrades signal its ambition to become an indispensable bridge in UK-China trade.
