Global Distrust in U.S. Policies Surges Post-100 Days: CGTN Poll

A recent CGTN global survey reveals escalating dissatisfaction with U.S. leadership and its 'America First' policies just 100 days into the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The poll, conducted in partnership with Renmin University of China, canvassed 15,947 respondents across 38 countries, uncovering a growing skepticism about America's economic direction and foreign relations.

Domestic Discontent and Economic Concerns

Nearly 49% of U.S. respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the new administration’s performance, with 53.1% criticizing reciprocal tariffs for destabilizing stock markets. Over 60% cited inflation concerns, while 54% questioned interest rate policies. Economic pessimism prevails: 43.1% anticipate a weaker U.S. economy within three months, and 47.5% believe the nation is on the 'wrong track.'

Allies Voice Mounting Distrust

The 'America First' agenda has eroded trust among traditional allies. Australian respondents reported the steepest decline, with 65.5% pessimistic about U.S.-Australia ties—a 24.5-point surge from prior polls. Over 70% of respondents in France, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (ROK) shared similar concerns. Italian respondents registered a 21.5-point rise in pessimism.

Global South Sentiment Sours

Pessimism extended to 82.6% of surveyed Global South nations, with South Africa, Egypt, Peru, Indonesia, and Malaysia showing confidence drops exceeding 20 percentage points. Respondents from Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Mexico, and others recorded double-digit declines, signaling waning faith in U.S. engagement under current policies.

Methodology and Scope

The poll spanned both developed economies—including the U.S., U.K., France, and Japan—and developing regions, such as Mexico and South Africa. Analysts suggest the findings highlight a critical inflection point in global perceptions of U.S. leadership.
